The National Medical Commission (NMC) will examine Andhra Pradesh’s request to extend the deadline for MBBS admissions and reduce the qualifying percentile for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) after 112 seats reserved under the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota remained vacant following counselling.

Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), acting on the state government’s directions, has sought an additional 15 days to complete admissions for the 2026–27 academic year. The university has also requested a relaxation in the NEET-UG 2026 qualifying percentile to widen the pool of eligible candidates.

The existing deadline for completing MBBS and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) admissions was October 26. The NMC has indicated that it will consider the university’s request after the deadline expires and subsequently take an appropriate decision. No approval for an extension or a reduction in the qualifying percentile had been announced in the reports published on October 26.

The vacancies persisted despite the completion of the first and second rounds of counselling, the mop-up round and the final stray vacancy round, which concluded on October 23

Of the 112 unfilled NRI-quota MBBS seats, 95 are in private medical colleges across Andhra Pradesh. The remaining vacancies comprise nine seats at Paderu Government Medical College and eight at Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women.

The university registrar has written to the NMC chairperson and officials of the Directorate General of Health Services, seeking additional time and a relaxation of the qualifying criteria.

Separately, the Andhra Pradesh Private Medical and Dental Colleges Managements Association has sought an extension of the admission deadline until November 20, 2026.

The NMC’s decision will determine whether the state can conduct further counselling to fill the remaining seats. Until an official order is issued, candidates should not assume that the deadline or NEET-UG eligibility criteria have changed.
