Coulter’s comments were widely criticized for their insensitivity and stereotyping

Prominent American conservative commentator and author, Ann Coulter, is currently facing significant backlash for making what many consider to be racist comments regarding two Indian-American candidates in the US presidential race — Niki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy. Coulter’s comments were widely criticized for their insensitivity and stereotyping.

During the first Republican presidential debate on August 23, Coulter made a comment characterizing a passionate exchange between former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy as “Hindu business,” as reported by NBC News and PTI. Coulter took to the social media platform X to express her view, stating, “Nikki and Vivek are involved in some Hindu business, it seems.”

  • Coulter’s comments have ignited discussions about the importance of respectful and accurate discourse in the realm of politics and media

  • The incident serves as a reminder of the responsibility media figures hold in shaping public perception and promoting informed discussions rather than perpetuating harmful stereotypes

In response to Coulter’s remarks, backlash began to mount on August 24. Vivek Ramaswamy’s senior adviser and communications director, Tricia McLaughlin, addressed the situation, asserting that Ann Coulter was entitled to her opinions and statements. McLaughlin’s tweet read, “Ann can tweet whatever she wants to.” She went on to highlight that Vivek Ramaswamy is aligned with the Judeo-Christian values on which the nation was founded and that his family life serves as a positive example for future generations.

Ironically, Coulter’s reference to “Hindu business” was tied to a heated exchange between the two candidates that was actually centered on US aid to Ukraine and Israel, rather than any religious aspect. This inaccuracy further fueled the criticism she received from both conservatives and liberals alike.

A responder on social media addressed Coulter’s comment directly, pointing out its factual inaccuracy and stating, “Nikki Haley was born Sikh and is a practicing Christian, you racist troglodyte.”

Sangay Mishra, the author of “Desis Divided: The Political Lives of South Asian Americans,” expressed his perspective on the situation, saying, “It was entirely expected that she would criticize them, but resorting to a white racist stereotype that invokes religion is not only offensive but also deeply disturbing.”
