US, UAE, UK and Canada reported the highest number of cases between 2021 and 2025, according to data presented in the Rajya Sabha
Instances of attacks involving Indians living abroad increased nearly sevenfold over five years, rising from 15 cases in 2021 to 104 in 2025, according to data presented by the Ministry of External Affairs in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
The figures cover 36 countries and regions and show that 302 incidents were reported between 2021 and 2025. Cases increased to 31 in 2022, more than doubled to 67 in 2023 and rose further to 85 in 2024 before reaching 104 last year.
The United States recorded the highest number of cases during the five-year period, with 33 incidents. The UAE followed with 32, while the UK and Canada reported 31 and 30 respectively.
Russia recorded 23 cases, Ireland 24 and Germany 19 during the period. The figures indicate significant differences in the pattern of incidents across countries.
In the US, reported attacks increased from one case in 2021 to six in 2022. After falling to one in 2023, the number rose sharply to 11 in 2024 and 14 in 2025.
The UAE recorded three cases in 2021, four in 2022, seven in 2023, six in 2024 and 12 in 2025. Canada also recorded a steady rise, from three cases in 2021 to eight last year.
The UK saw one case in 2021, rising to four in 2022 and 11 in 2023. The figure stood at 10 in 2024 before falling to five in 2025
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh told the Rajya Sabha that the safety and security of Indians abroad remained a foremost priority for the government. Indian missions and posts, he said, continue to monitor incidents involving Indian nationals and remain vigilant about their welfare.
