A Consulate General of India is set to grace Auckland soon, catering to the significant population of non-resident Indians residing in New Zealand’s largest city. The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting held on December 27, sanctioned the establishment of this consulate, as per an official statement reported by PTI.

The operationalization of the consulate is anticipated within the next 12 months. Currently, India has a consulate in Auckland, led by an honorary consul. The elevation to Consulate General status signifies the potential appointment of a consul general, typically an officer from the Indian Foreign Service (IFS).

The establishment of a Consulate General reflects India’s commitment to fostering diplomatic ties, commercial ventures, and the overall welfare of its diaspora in the region. It’s noteworthy that the Indian High Commission in New Zealand is presently situated in Wellington.

This move is seen as a pivotal step to augment India’s diplomatic presence and reinforce representation, aligning with its expanding global engagements. The official statement emphasized that the Consulate General in Auckland would not only serve to enhance India’s strategic and commercial interests but also contribute to the well-being of the sizable Indian community in Auckland.

With an estimated 2.5 lakh people of Indian origin in New Zealand, including a substantial 1.7 lakh residing in Auckland, the need for an upgraded consulate is evident. Furthermore, Auckland hosts the India-New Zealand Business Council. The establishment of a Consulate General reflects India’s commitment to fostering diplomatic ties, commercial ventures, and the overall welfare of its diaspora in the region. It’s noteworthy that the Indian High Commission in New Zealand is presently situated in Wellington.
