Australia will start offering up to 1,000 work and holiday visas annually to Indian citizens beginning October 1, 2024, reported deccanherald.com.
This initiative is part of the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), which came into effect in December 2022. The visa program is aimed at strengthening the mobility of Indian nationals and deepening the people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, during his recent three-day visit to Australia, expressed optimism about the new visa program. He emphasized that this initiative will significantly enhance mobility and foster stronger connections between India and Australia. Goyal also highlighted that this move is a key commitment under the AI-ECTA, which both nations are actively implementing.
Both nations have set an ambitious target of achieving AUD 100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Additionally, the discussions included increasing cooperation in multilateral and regional forums
Indian nationals between the ages of 18 to 30 will be eligible to apply for the one-year multiple-entry visa, allowing them to work, study, and travel across Australia. The temporary stay visa will enable up to 1,000 Indian citizens to explore opportunities under Australia’s legal framework, subject to eligibility criteria.
Beyond the implementation of AI-ECTA, both sides are actively working on expanding the trade agreement to a more comprehensive version under the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). Goyal’s visit facilitated discussions on progress related to CECA and ECTA initiatives. Meetings with Australian and Indian businesses in Sydney underscored the mutual interest in enhancing trade and investment ties.
