Bangladesh’s interim government has recalled five key diplomats, including High Commissioner to India, Mustafizur Rahman, marking a major shift in the country’s foreign policy, hindustantimes.com reported.

The recalled envoys, stationed in significant global capitals, include Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the UN in New York, and ambassadors to Australia, Belgium, and Portugal. This decision has stirred concerns within Bangladesh’s diplomatic circles, as several of those recalled were career diplomats nearing retirement.

Mustafizur Rahman, who has played a vital role in strengthening Bangladesh-India ties since his appointment in 2022, is among the most significant recalls. His departure reflects the shifting dynamics in Bangladesh’s foreign policy under the new administration

The caretaker government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, assumed office after Sheikh Hasina’s government fell in August following student-led protests.

Hasina fled to India after stepping down. Yunus’ administration faces diplomatic challenges, particularly with India, as efforts to secure a meeting between Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent UN General Assembly were reportedly unsuccessful. Yunus’ remarks criticizing India and his push for Hasina’s extradition have heightened tensions between the two neighbors.
