A delegation from Bapatla district in India has completed a study visit to Goa to understand how the coastal state manages tourism in a sustainable and organised way. The visit, held from February 19 to 21, was led by District Collector Dr V. Vinod Kumar and focused on learning best practices in coastal regulation, safety, environmental protection and community-led tourism.
One of the key lessons came from Goa’s strict Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules, which control construction and protect fragile coastal areas. Goa has managed to grow its tourism sector while safeguarding its beaches, marine life and natural habitats. The Bapatla team plans to use similar rules to ensure tourism growth does not harm the environment.
The delegation also studied Goa’s safety systems, including the Tourist Police and Drishti Marine lifeguard services. These measures help keep visitors safe and improve the overall tourism experience. Bapatla is considering setting up similar systems to build confidence among tourists and residents.
Community involvement was another major highlight. Goa actively involves local businesses, residents and tourism operators in planning and managing tourism.
The Bapatla team also explored eco-tourism initiatives, scientific beach cleaning methods and solid waste management systems that keep beaches clean and support green tourism
The delegation reviewed Goa’s beach infrastructure, shack allocation system and revenue-sharing models, which ensure local communities benefit directly from tourism. They also learned about biodiversity conservation efforts and community-based tourism projects such as homestays, river cruises and spice farm tours.
Officials believe that adopting these practices could help Bapatla develop a diverse, safe and environmentally responsible coastal tourism sector.
