A group of Indians residing in Canada have joined hands to promote the country among Indian regional filmmakers. The group is welcoming Gujarati, Marathi and Bhojpuri filmmakers to come to Canada to shoot and promote regional language films. The patrons of the group say many Punjabi films are shot in Canada as the diaspora encourages them but otherwise the place is not popular among filmmakers of other regional languages, reported ahmedabadmirror.com.

As part of the initiative, a Gujarati film will be shot in Canada. The move is aimed to provide a platform to highlight regional language stories from India on a global stage.

The Indo-Canadian group has taken up the initiative under the banner of HRS Films.  The group is made up of doctors, advocates, entrepreneurs, and industrialists from Canada and India.

Himanshu Asher, a young industrialist from Mumbai is making efforts to promote Marathi cinema. He has co-produced two Marathi films in India and now wants to go to Canada to produce another. This, he believes, will help build a strong and positive image of India.

Dr Shivendra Dwivedi, who is settled in Canada and originally hails from Uttar Pradesh, wants to promote Bhojpuri films. The films he said will showcase the traditions and customs of India which the young generation living abroad is unaware of.

Hemant Shah, chairman of the India Trade Committee in Canada said filmmakers can also get tax incentives. “A producer will get a credit of 25% of labour costs. Canadian infrastructure will give a boost to Indian producers,” he said. Many Bollywood films have been shot in Europe and UK.
