Canadian MP and entrepreneur Maninder Sidhu has been appointed as the Minister of International Trade in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s newly announced cabinet, underscoring the growing influence of Indian-origin leaders in Canada’s political and economic landscape, reported gujaratsamachar.com.

A seasoned businessman and parliamentarian, Sidhu pledges to expand trade and create jobs across Canada

Sidhu, 41, was officially sworn in on Tuesday. Before entering politics in 2019, he ran an international trade consultancy and offered strategic guidance to Canadian firms on tariffs, trade policies, and growth opportunities. His LinkedIn profile highlights his extensive work in helping businesses navigate global markets.

Sidhu’s political career saw him rise quickly, first as Parliamentary Secretary to the Foreign Minister, followed by a role assisting the International Trade Ministry, laying the groundwork for his current cabinet position.

In a post on X, Sidhu expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Carney for the trust placed in him. “I will work to diversify trade, support Canadian businesses in reaching new global markets, and help create good-paying jobs across Canada,” he stated. He had earlier remarked on Facebook: “Canada is a trading nation — and we must strengthen and expand the infrastructure that connects us to global markets.”

Sidhu joins Anita Anand as part of a growing Indian-origin leadership presence in Canada’s foreign-facing roles

Sidhu joins Anita Anand, another prominent Canadian of Indian descent, who has been appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. Anand, a former Defence and Transport Minister, had announced her retirement from politics but was persuaded by Carney to return and take up the critical foreign affairs portfolio. One of her key tasks will be resetting strained ties with India and navigating Canada’s relations with the US under President Donald Trump.

Unveiling his 28-member cabinet, PM Carney urged his ministers to “bring new ideas, a clear focus and decisive actions” to deliver on the government’s mandate for change.
