Recent data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada reveals an unprecedented surge in Indian-born immigrants obtaining Canadian citizenship in 2022. The statistics indicate a remarkable milestone, with 59,503 individuals from India acquiring Canadian citizenship, marking a staggering 171% surge compared to the previous year, as highlighted by newcanadianmedia.ca.

In the broader context, Indian nationals constituted a significant portion, representing 16% of the total 375,413 individuals who embraced Canadian citizenship in 2022. This surge in Indian-born immigrants opting for Canadian citizenship reflects a diverse and dynamic demographic shift in the country.

The increasing number of Indian nationals choosing Canadian citizenship underlines the attractiveness of Canada as a destination and the significance of the privileges associated with being a Canadian citizen

A noteworthy aspect of this influx is the mandatory relinquishment of Indian citizenship by these individuals, as India does not permit dual nationalities. However, India provides an alternative in the form of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.

This document grants a lifelong visa and rights akin to those of an Indian citizen to individuals of Indian origin residing abroad. The increasing number of Indian nationals choosing Canadian citizenship underlines the attractiveness of Canada as a destination and the significance of the privileges associated with being a Canadian citizen.
