Chakma representatives remain firm in their request, calling on India to take a decisive stance to ensure the safety of the indigenous hill tribes in Bangladesh
Chakma groups in India have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider diplomatic relations with Bangladesh following the violent attacks on indigenous hill tribes in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs), reported newindianexpress.com. In a letter sent on Friday, Chakma representatives reported that the Bangladesh Army, along with illegal settlers, targeted these minority groups, resulting in the destruction of homes and the loss of lives.
The letter highlighted the organized attacks that began on September 19, with over 100 houses and shops being burned, and at least nine tribal individuals killed. The Bangladesh Army allegedly fired indiscriminately at the hill tribes, an act that has shocked the Chakma community in India.
Representatives like Suhas Chakma, Nirupam Chakma, and others signed the letter, urging the Indian government to take a stand. They emphasized that until the killings and the organized violence by the Bangladesh Army cease, there should be no diplomatic engagement with Bangladesh’s caretaker government, led by Prof Yunus.
The letter also pointed out that from August 5th to 20th, over 1,090 houses, businesses, and places of worship of minority communities had been destroyed. While Prof Yunus had reportedly sought a meeting with PM Modi in New York, official sources confirmed that the meeting would not take place, signaling India’s serious concern about the issue.
