Chennai’s markets are seeing an early arrival of mangoes, with prices set to drop as the harvest peaks later this month.

The first varieties of mangoes, like the Banganapalli, are already available, with prices at Rs 200 per kilogram at the wholesale market and up to Rs 300 at retail. Other varieties like Sindura are selling for Rs 160 at Koyambedu and up to Rs 200 in local markets, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Mango Mania Expected to Peak Soon

D Manivannan, a stall owner at Koyambedu, shared that the early season mangoes are already drawing attention, with the Banganapalli variety being the star of the show for its sweet and juicy flesh. “Mango frenzy is in full swing now,” he said. However, vendors expect prices to drop as more varieties, such as Alphonso and Totapuri, arrive in the next 10 days. “From what we see in the farms, we know the harvest will be very good this time. With good yields, we expect the cost to come down to Rs 60-80 per kilogram in peak summer,” Manivannan added.

Other Fruits and Local Favorites Heat Up the Market

Alongside mangoes, other fruits are also flooding the markets. Vendors are seeing an increase in the arrival of oranges (loose jacket variety), musk melons, watermelons, grapes, dragon fruit, and water apples. “Water apples are now a city favorite, with high demand,” said Murthy K, a vendor in Virugambakkam. The subtle sweetness of the water apples makes them one of the top sellers in the area.

Street vendors will soon start offering refreshing mango juice for around Rs 25, and hotels will host mango melas serving both traditional and innovative mango dishes.

“This is the best season for raw mangoes that can be pickled and used throughout the year,” said Shanmugam R, another vendor.
