Dubai-based Indian businessman Firoz Merchant has helped secure the release of more than 20,000 prisoners across the UAE since 2008, continuing a long-standing humanitarian mission focused on debt relief and medical support, reported gulftoday.ae.
Each year during Ramadan, Merchant works with local authorities to free inmates jailed for unpaid debts. This Ramadan, 497 prisoners have already been released, while additional cases remain under review. The initiative is carried out in coordination with officials and in partnership with the Khalifa Foundation. It spans several emirates, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah.

Merchant’s work extends beyond prison releases. During Ramadan, he increases his charitable efforts to assist cancer patients struggling with rising treatment costs. On 18 February, the first day of the holy month, he met officials from the Cancer Patient Care Society to discuss further financial support for patients in need.
Earlier in 2025, Merchant donated Dhs1 million through the Dubai Charity Association to cover dialysis and related medical expenses for 11 patients.
