Despite opposition from the Greens, the EU Climate Law endorsed the European Parliament that voted to adopt the law, which increases the EU’s 2030 emissions reduction target from 40 per cent to at least 55 per cent.

“Parliament endorsed the Climate Law, agreed informally with member states in April, with 442 votes to 203 and 51 abstentions,” the parliament said in a statement on Thursday (June 24).

The European Parliament’s endorsement of the EU Climate Law is a huge endorsement of global concern on climate change, as with this, the EU will raise its emissions reduction target to at least 55 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030, from the previous goal of 40 per cent.

It voted in favour of an agreement with the EU Council on the bloc’s revamped greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets for 2030 and 2050.

The parliament said, “It transforms the European Green Deal’s political commitment to EU climate neutrality by 2050 into a binding obligation.”

“It gives European citizens and businesses the legal certainty and predictability they need to plan for this transition. After 2050, the EU will aim for negative emissions,” it said.

The Greens, however, were against it saying the law was not ambitious enough and voted against it. They joined hands with the far-right Identity and Democracy group (ID) and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), who abstained from voting. The Left also strongly opposed the legislation.
