Experts discuss NRI marriages in Punjab

Speakers highlighted finer points of the problem at the daylong webinar on ‘NRI Marriages: Issues, challenges and the way forward’ and suggested ways to rehabilitate the deserted spouses

Issues of brides abandoned by NRI grooms, illegal migration, societal reforms and rehabilitation of deserted spouses came for discussion at a webinar held at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, The Indian Express reported.

The webinar was organized by the PAU’s department of extension education and communication management of the College of Community Science in collaboration with the National Commission of Women (NCW).

Experts highlighted finer points of the problem at the daylong webinar on ‘NRI Marriages: Issues, challenges and the way forward’ and suggested ways to rehabilitate the deserted spouses.

The Indian Express quoted Dr Rajesh Gill, professor, sociology, Panjab University. He emphasised that society as a whole need to change the mindset and accept that marriage is not the only aspiration of a woman. Like men, women should also be guided to be financially independent before getting married.

The webinar was divided into three sessions: 1.’NRI Grooms: Another story of Patriarchy’; 2. ‘NRI marriages: Issues and challenges,’ and 3. ‘Laws related to NRI marriages: Conflict of laws’.

Among the speakers were Dr Manoj Kumar, Associate Professor, GCG, Chandigarh; Bikramjeeet Singh Sidhu, senior advocate, Punjab & Haryana High Court; Satwinder Kaur Satti, president, and Abb Nahi, an NGO working for brides abandoned by NRI grooms.

Dr Manoj Kumar called for checking the details of prospective grooms before getting married. He sought the government’s active involvement and societal reforms to address the issue.

Senior advocate at Punjab and Haryana High Court, Bikramjeeet Singh Sidhu, highlighted laws to assist the victims. He asked the victims to report the issue at the right forum and get relief.

Abb Nahi is an NGO that works with the brides abandoned by NRI grooms. Its president, Satwinder Kaur Satti, shared experiences of women deserted by their husbands.
