Two back-to-back incidents at Ayodhya’s Hanumangarhi Temple send the devotees and the local police into a tizzy. First, an explosive hoax on July 24, and a few days back, the local priests and the mahant came at loggerheads.

Post the explosive hoax, a man who had acted under the influence of alcohol, was arrested. He had himself called the police and told them that an explosive had been planted at the temple, officials said.

Police and PAC have been posted outside the temple ever since.

The Hanumangarhi temple is in the Saadat Ganj area on the outskirts of Faizabad city, near the entry gate of the Faizabad Cantonment. The temple premises were immediately cordoned off, and an explosive disposal squad launched. A thorough search carried out in which nothing was found.

The caller identified by the police as Anil Kumar, was found to be a resident of Kanpur, currently living in Faizabad.

He was arrested. Lter, during interrogation, he admitted to making a fake call, and legal action was initiated against him.

Earlier, a few days back, the local priests and the mahant came at loggerheads over offering prasad (laddu) to the deity. Angered after the unsavoury altercation, the Mahant Premdas put a lock at the gates of the temple, thus barring entry of devotees, who had queued up for darshan.

As per reports, the dispute arose when the priests refused laddu offerings in view of Covid norms currently in place. Also, laddus on sale in shops outside the temple, were thrown away by supporters of Nirwani Akhara chief secretary, Gauri Shankar Das, claiming that they were rotten. Police and PAC have been posted outside the temple ever since.

Hanuman Garhi is a 10th-century temple of Hanuman in Ayodhya and is one of the most important temples in the city along with other temples such as Nageshwar Nath and the in-construction Ram Temple.
