Multiple locations under scanner as fake NRI certificates surface in MBBS admission racket
Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated a new round of search operations across Kolkata on Tuesday in connection with a scam involving fraudulent admissions to private medical colleges under the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota. The searches are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged malpractices where fake NRI documents were used to secure MBBS seats in exchange for large sums of money, reported goachronicle.com.
Middlemen under ED lens for orchestrating fake NRI admissions into private MBBS programs
According to official sources, ED teams began the raids early in the morning, targeting multiple locations including New Town, Kareya, and Ballygunge. The operations are focused on the offices and residences of suspected middlemen who allegedly facilitated admissions for ineligible students by arranging forged NRI certificates.
The ED’s Kolkata bureau launched the coordinated operation from the CGO Complex, supported by Central Armed Police Forces including CRPF jawans, who secured the premises being searched
Sources revealed that the investigation stemmed from a police complaint lodged in the northern suburbs of Kolkata. The complaint highlighted how fake NRI documents were systematically used to help non-NRI candidates fraudulently access the highly competitive NRI quota in several private medical colleges across the region.

The alleged middlemen are believed to have collected substantial sums of money from aspiring medical students and their families, exploiting the NRI quota to bypass regular admission processes. The ED suspects this racket may involve a wider network spanning multiple institutions and states.
The use of counterfeit NRI certificates not only deprived legitimate NRI candidates of rightful admission but also exposed critical vulnerabilities in the college admission system. The ED is expected to interrogate several suspects and examine financial trails as the investigation continues.
