Global diaspora body puts forward suggestions on issues concerning NRIs and people of Indian origin
The Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) has submitted a memorandum outlining key concerns and suggestions relating to the Indian diaspora to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, seeking greater attention to issues affecting Indians and people of Indian origin overseas.
The memorandum was presented as part of GOPIO’s continuing engagement with the Government of India on matters concerning the global Indian community. The organisation has traditionally focused on diaspora issues spanning social, cultural, educational, economic and community concerns.
GOPIO, founded in New York in 1989, has developed an international network representing people of Indian origin in several countries. Its stated objectives include strengthening communication among diaspora communities, addressing issues affecting NRIs and PIOs, and promoting cooperation between overseas Indian communities and India.
The submission comes at a time when diaspora-related issues remain an important part of India’s external engagement. Indians living overseas face a wide range of concerns, including consular assistance, migration and employment, education, investment, cultural preservation and support during emergencies.

The organisation has also been active in promoting dialogue between diaspora groups and Indian institutions

In 2025, GOPIO Malaysia participated in the PIO Dialogue with the Government of India, where discussions covered education, research, knowledge exchange and stronger institutional links with the diaspora
GOPIO is preparing for its 2026 biennial convention in Mumbai from December 18 to 20. The event will bring together diaspora leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, academics and community representatives, with discussions planned on investment, technology, entrepreneurship, youth and wider diaspora concerns.
The latest memorandum adds to GOPIO’s efforts to place diaspora concerns before Indian policymakers and strengthen institutional dialogue between India and its overseas communities.
