Green Card: Indians to benefit from removal of 7pc cap

The recent US announcement of the abolition of 7 per cent limit for every country for Green Card is likely to benefit Indian professionals.

Going by the indications, the limit for every country in the US may soon end. Both parties in the US House of Representatives have jointly introduced a bill to remove the limit on employment-based green cards given to each country.

The parties were convinced that the discrepancy is in the current limit that the countries with less population will also get the same amount of visas as countries with high population.

Over time the demand for US visa has increase manifold since 1990.

Congress members Joe Lofgren and John Kurtis introduced the bill in the House. The amendments in the policy is likely to benefit Indian IT professionals who have been waiting for a green card for a long time.

The act is known as the ‘Equal Access to Green Cards for Legal Employment (EAGLE) Act-2021’ needs to be passed in the Senate first. After that it will go to the White House for the President’s signature.

The limit of 7 per cent was set in 1990. It was revised last in the same year when the Parliament set a worldwide cap on visa allocation, and the seven per cent per country cap remains in place today.

The bill seeks to remove the seven per cent for every country cap on employment-based migrant visas. In addition, the limit of seven per cent per country on family-sponsored visas has been increased to 15 per cent. Lofgren, Chair of the House’s subcommittee on immigration and citizenship, said: “We all know that our immigration system is deeply flawed and has been flawed for decades.”

Advantages of having Green Card

Holders of Green Card gives migrants permanent residence rights. The cards, officially recognized as permanent resident card, were issued to immigrants in the US as proof.
