There is ray of hope for getting WHO approval for Covaxin Covid-19 vaccine. Many Indian nationals and Non-Resident-Indians who have taken Covaxin are not able to travel abroad due the vaccine’s non-approval by the WHO and subsequently by many countries.

Marianne Simao, a WHO assistant director general for vaccines, also said that the UN health agency’s assessment of Covaxin was quite advanced and officials hoped for a decision by mid-September.

Bharat Biotech, which is the vaccine’s developer, has deposited Phase 3 clinical trials data to the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) with 77.8 per cent efficacy.

Indian Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also held a meeting with Dr Soumya Swaminathan, WHO Chief Scientist, to discuss the approval of the vaccine.

Among the WHO list of approved vaccines are vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Johnson and Johnson, Moderna, and Sinopharm.
