The Consulate General of India in Chicago has launched a search operation to locate a distressed woman from Hyderabad who is reportedly in a state of starvation and depression in the United States. According to a report by PTI, the consulate has assured that it will extend all necessary support to her.

The woman, originally from Telangana, had traveled to the US to pursue higher education. However, she was recently spotted in Chicago in a dire condition, on the brink of starvation. Alarmed by the situation, her mother reached out to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, seeking assistance in bringing her daughter back home.

In a poignant letter shared on the Twitter page of Khaleeq-ur-Rahman, a leader from Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the distressed mother identified her daughter as Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi. Zaidi had embarked on her educational journey by enrolling for an MS program at TRINE University, Detroit, in August 2021.

For the past two months, the family had not been in contact with her. It was only recently that they received information from two individuals in Hyderabad about Zaidi’s alarming situation in Chicago. They informed the family that she was battling severe depression and had lost all her belongings, leaving her stranded and starving on the streets.

The Consulate General of India in Chicago has taken the matter very seriously and is actively involved in the search operation. Collaborating with local law enforcement agencies and non-governmental organizations, the consulate is leaving no stone unturned to locate the distressed woman. They have assured PTI that they will provide all necessary consular, medical, and other forms of support to help Zaidi.

A ray of hope emerged when Khaleeq-ur-Rahman’s Twitter update revealed that he managed to establish contact with a Chicago-based social worker named Mukarram. Rahman reported that Mukarram and his family have successfully met with Zaidi, and she is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

Further information received suggests that Zaidi’s depression and mental instability are directly linked to her financial struggles in the US, where she faced difficulties in securing employment. To facilitate her return to India, it is crucial for her to recover from her depression. Rahman quoted Mukarram’s sentiments on the matter.

In light of the situation, the BRS leader expressed his intention to request External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s support in facilitating the travel of Zaidi’s mother to the US. The presence and support of her mother could play a pivotal role in aiding Zaidi’s recovery and ensuring her safe return to India.
