In the past 24 hours, Mumbai and its suburbs experienced heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving extremely heavy showers. However, there were no major reports of waterlogging in low-lying areas, as per officials.
In response to the intense weather conditions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took precautionary measures and declared a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges in Mumbai. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert for the metropolis, indicating the likelihood of severe weather.
The IMD forecasted that the city and suburbs could expect heavy to very heavy rain in the next 24 hours, with the possibility of occasional gusty winds reaching 45-55 kmph
The rainfall measurements recorded at various observatories were as follows: The Colaba observatory registered “extremely heavy” rainfall at 223.2 mm, while the Santacruz observatory recorded 145.1 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Thursday. Other areas also experienced significant downpours, with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus recording 153.5 mm, Ram Mandir area 161 mm, Byculla 119 mm, Sion 112 mm, and Bandra 106 mm of rainfall.
The BMC urged citizens to remain alert and stay indoors during this period of heavy rain and follow the instructions provided by the administration to ensure their safety.
Additionally, there were high tide alerts in effect, with a recorded tide of 3.31 meters at 6.38 am on Thursday and a predicted tide of 3.32 meters at 5.58 pm.
