Narendra Modi and Mark Carney reaffirm cooperation on trade, energy, technology and security as negotiations gather pace to double bilateral trade by 2030
India and Canada have agreed to strengthen their strategic partnership across trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties, signalling continued efforts to rebuild relations and expand economic cooperation.
The agreement followed a telephone conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on October 13, during which both leaders discussed ways to turn the recent improvement in bilateral engagement into concrete results.
Modi described the conversation as warm and productive, saying the two countries could contribute towards a more stable and prosperous world. Both leaders expressed their commitment to building on the renewed momentum in bilateral relations.
Trade remains a key priority, with the two governments working towards concluding negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The proposed pact is intended to expand market access, encourage investment and support efforts to increase bilateral trade substantially by 2030.
The latest engagement comes amid a series of high-level diplomatic and commercial exchanges. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is visiting India from October 13 to 16, while International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu is leading a delegation of nearly 300 Canadian business representatives on a trade mission running from October 12 to 17.
The delegation is exploring opportunities in sectors including clean technology, energy transition, aerospace, information and communications technology, life sciences and agri-food.

Energy cooperation, security and defence engagement, artificial intelligence and closer people-to-people connections are also on the agenda. Officials from both countries have held security discussions covering law enforcement and areas of mutual concern.
The renewed engagement follows a period of strained relations after the 2023 killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, which triggered a major diplomatic dispute.
Despite the earlier tensions, recent discussions indicate a willingness on both sides to restore confidence and pursue shared economic and strategic interests. Carney is expected to visit India in December, providing another opportunity to advance the partnership.
