India to repatriate 18,000 citizens from US

India works to comply with Trump’s immigration policies in an effort to avoid trade conflict

India has agreed to work with the Trump administration to return approximately 18,000 illegal Indian migrants residing in the United States, signaling New Delhi’s willingness to cooperate and avoid trade tensions with the new US President, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

India hopes that its cooperation will secure protections for legal immigration channels like student and skilled worker visas

India’s cooperation with the US on the deportation of illegal migrants is part of broader efforts to maintain good relations with the Trump administration, which has made cracking down on illegal migration a key priority. In exchange, India hopes that the US will continue to support its legal immigration programs, especially the H-1B visa system, which sees the highest number of applicants from India.

  • Despite the modest contribution of Indian migrants to US illegal immigration, their numbers have been rising, particularly along the northern US border

  • This increase has raised concerns, but India is working to curb illegal migration while fostering legal pathways for its citizens

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government sees the deportation effort as a step towards improving bilateral relations and reinforcing global labor agreements, while also deterring secessionist movements like the Khalistan movement, which has supporters in the US.

While India has maintained a friendly relationship with Trump, there are concerns over potential trade repercussions. Trump has long criticized India’s import tariffs and could impose retaliatory measures if diplomatic tensions rise.

India continues to focus on migration and mobility cooperation with the US while managing trade concerns and strengthening international partnerships.
