India has issued a strong travel and safety advisory for its citizens in Venezuela, urging them to exercise extreme caution and restrict all non-essential movement in light of rapidly escalating tensions following reported US military strikes and dramatic claims from Washington regarding the Venezuelan leadership.
In an official statement released on Saturday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) advised all Indians currently residing in or visiting Venezuela to remain vigilant and stay in constant touch with the Embassy of India in Caracas. The advisory underlined the need for heightened caution as the security situation in the South American nation continues to evolve unpredictably.
“All Indians who are in Venezuela for any reason are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements, and remain in contact with the Embassy of India in Caracas,” the MEA said, adding that developments on the ground are being closely monitored.
The advisory follows claims by US President Donald Trump that American forces carried out large-scale airstrikes on Caracas in the early hours of Saturday and captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a pre-dawn operation
Trump asserted that the couple had been taken into US custody and flown out of Venezuela, and that Maduro would face trial in Manhattan federal court on multiple charges, including narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine trafficking conspiracy and weapons-related offences.
While the US claims have sent shockwaves across the region, Venezuelan authorities have not officially confirmed or acknowledged the reported capture of the president. However, multiple explosions were reported in Caracas during the early morning hours, according to local accounts. Residents described scenes of chaos, including low-flying aircraft, fires in several areas, widespread power outages and thick plumes of smoke rising over parts of the capital.
The situation has raised concerns among foreign nationals and diplomatic missions operating in Venezuela, prompting several countries to reassess security advisories for their citizens. India’s advisory reflects growing uncertainty over the stability of the country and the potential for further military action or civil unrest.
Indian nationals in Venezuela have been advised to avoid public gatherings, follow local news closely, keep essential supplies ready, and share their location and contact details with the Indian Embassy. The MEA has reiterated that the Embassy of India in Caracas remains available for assistance and emergency support.
