South African police have launched an investigation after an Indian community centre in Johannesburg was damaged in a suspected arson attack reported within the past 24 hours. Emergency services responded overnight after residents reported smoke and flames emerging from part of the building complex.
According to police officials, the fire damaged administrative offices and sections used for cultural events and educational programmes. No injuries were reported because the facility was closed at the time of the incident.
Investigators stated that forensic teams are examining whether accelerants were used. “At this stage we are treating the fire as suspicious pending further evidence,” a police spokesperson said
Community leaders described the attack as deeply distressing, particularly because the centre serves as a major gathering point for Indian families, senior citizens, and youth organisations. “This place represents decades of community history and social work,” said one local organiser.
Security camera footage from nearby businesses is being reviewed, while additional police patrols have been deployed in the area. Authorities have not yet identified suspects or confirmed a motive.
The incident has triggered wider concern among diaspora organisations across South Africa about the vulnerability of cultural institutions to vandalism and targeted attacks. Several civic groups have called for improved protection measures around religious and community facilities.
The Indian High Commission in Pretoria acknowledged the incident and stated that it is in contact with local authorities.
