A recent push by Indian-American groups has brought the community to the forefront of the 2024 US presidential elections. The “Indo American Votes Matter” campaign, initiated by the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS), emphasizes the importance of Indian-American participation in shaping US policies. As reported on September 3, the campaign aims to increase voter turnout and political influence in key battleground states such as Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

With over 4.5 million Indian-Americans across the United States, the community represents a growing and influential demographic. Khanderao Kand, FIIDS Chief of Policy and Strategy, highlighted that Indian-Americans, particularly in swing states, hold the potential to be decisive in determining the outcome of the 2024 elections. “Our goal is to register at least a million Indian-American voters to ensure their voices are heard by both the Republican and Democratic parties,” Kand stated.

With the Indian diaspora standing firmly behind her, Kamala Harris’s candidacy represents more than just a political campaign—it symbolizes the progress of one of the nation’s most dynamic immigrant groups

In a parallel effort, a grassroots campaign, “Indian Americans for Harris,” is working to mobilize support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Launched by a group of prominent Indian-Americans, the initiative aims to elect Harris, the first individual of Indian descent, as President of the United States. Swadesh Chatterjee, a North Carolina-based businessman, explained that Harris’s Indian heritage and values make her a unique candidate for the presidency. “This is the first time we have someone with an Indian background running for the highest office,” Chatterjee said, noting her significance as a symbol of America’s diversity.

Kamala Harris, whose mother is of Indian origin, resonates with many in the Indian-American community, especially as they near five million in number. The “Indian Americans for Harris” campaign focuses on mobilizing voters in battleground states, believing Harris embodies the melting pot of cultures that the US represents.

Members of the group see this election as a historic moment. As one of the most successful immigrant communities in the US, Indian-Americans are poised to have one of their own at the helm of the country. “Kamala Harris is the right leader for these times. As the world struggles with inequities and division, we believe she can guide the US and the world toward greater harmony,” the group’s statement reads.
