Government’s Commitment Highlighted Amidst Growing Indian Diaspora in Canada
In a recent parliamentary session on December 15, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan reiterated the Indian government’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of Indian nationals residing in Canada. Citing data from Ottawa’s 2021 census, Muraleedharan informed the Lok Sabha that a substantial number of Canadian citizens, approximately 8.3 lakh, identify with Hinduism, while 7.7 lakh report Sikhism as their religion.
“As per available information through Canada Census data (2021), 8,30,000 Canadian citizens reported affiliation to Hinduism and 7,70,000 Canadian citizens reported Sikhism as their religion,” Muraleedharan stated in a written reply to parliamentary inquiries, according to a report by timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

The disclosure of these demographic statistics underscores the significance of addressing the concerns and ensuring the safety of the Indian community in Canada. The government emphasizes that the security and well-being of its nationals abroad remain a top priority.
These assurances come against a backdrop of strained relations between India and Canada, heightened by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations in September. Trudeau’s remarks, linking Indian agents to the alleged killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June, had added tension to diplomatic ties.
