Congress Leader Partap Singh Bajwa Appealed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to Address Stagnation in Punjab State Commission for NRIs

In a missive to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa highlights the distress faced by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) due to prolonged vacancies in the Punjab State Commission for NRIs. Bajwa emphasized the urgency of immediate action to fill the vacant positions, underscoring the Commission’s vital role in safeguarding the interests of NRIs.

Bajwa, Leader of Opposition, points out that the Commission has been at a “standstill” since August, hampering its ability to address pending cases. The vacancies include the positions of the chairman and members, leading to a lapse in hearing cases, passing orders, and accepting new complaints.

The Commission, established under the Non-Resident Indians Act, 2011, plays a pivotal role in protecting the rights of NRIs. With the tenures of key members ending, including Chairman Justice Shekher Dhawan, Bajwa stresses the need for prompt appointments to ensure the Commission’s seamless operation.

Highlighting the plight of NRIs eagerly awaiting the government’s decision, Bajwa reveals that despite daily attendance of staff at the office, there is no work due to the lack of leadership. The Leader of Opposition urges the government to prioritize the appointment of a new chairman and members to address the concerns of NRIs, who remain in limbo as their cases remain unresolved.

Bajwa concludes by expressing disappointment in the government’s inaction and calls for empowering the NRI Commission rather than hindering its functionality, emphasizing the need for decisive steps to address the challenges faced by the NRIs.
