The Centre has formed a high-level committee to study unusual demographic changes across the country and recommend solutions within a fixed timeframe. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision on Tuesday, saying the panel will examine shifts linked to illegal immigration and other unnatural causes.

The committee will be led by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar. According to government sources, the panel will carry out a detailed review of population changes in different regions of India. It will study variations among religious and social groups and analyse the reasons behind what the government has described as abnormal demographic movements.

  • The panel is expected to include Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, retired IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, former IPS officer Balaji Srivastava and economist Dr Shamika Ravi

  • The members have been asked to prepare practical recommendations that can help the government deal with the issue in a structured manner

Speaking about the move, Shah said the government wants a clear understanding of demographic trends across the country. He added that the committee would focus on identifying changes caused by illegal immigration as well as other unusual factors affecting population patterns.

The decision comes amid growing concern within government circles over the possible impact of illegal immigration on regional demographics. Some areas have witnessed noticeable population shifts in recent years, leading to calls for a closer examination of the issue.
