A 42-year-old Indian-origin man has been sentenced to five months in prison in Singapore for molesting a young woman, according to local media reports. The man, identified as Om Kumar Rai, pleaded guilty to using criminal force with the intent to outrage the woman’s modesty.
The incident took place in the early hours of 17 June 2025, when Rai approached a 22-year-old woman and claimed to be a workmate of her father. He tried to start a casual conversation before extending his hand to greet her. Instead of a brief handshake, Rai held onto the woman’s right hand and kissed the back of it. He repeated this action twice, despite the woman trying to pull her hand away the second time.
Rai then guided the woman to a staircase landing under the pretext of continuing the conversation. There, he molested her.
The woman managed to push him away and left the area, returning home safely. She later informed her parents about the incident, and a police report was filed the same morning
Prosecutors described Rai’s actions as intrusive and deliberate, noting that he had lured the victim to a secluded area before committing the offence. They sought a jail term of five to six months, arguing that his behaviour caused distress and violated the woman’s personal boundaries.
Under Singapore law, using criminal force with the intent to outrage a person’s modesty is a serious offence. Those convicted can face up to three years in prison, a fine, caning, or a combination of these penalties, depending on the severity of the case.
