Rohit Joy faces backlash for demanding termination of H-1B visa programme and deportation of holders
A controversial social media post by an Indian-origin man in the United States has ignited a heated debate, after he publicly advocated for ending the H-1B visa program and sending all visa holders back to their home countries. Rohit Joy’s remarks came in reaction to political efforts aimed at expanding and modernising the US visa system, reported hindustantimes.com.
“All H-1B visas should expire… visa holders should be sent back,” Joy wrote, drawing sharp criticism across platforms.
The post was a direct response to Republican Congressman Rich McCormick’s statement supporting the expansion of domestic visa renewals for H-1B and other low-risk categories. McCormick emphasised modernisation, reduced costs, and efficiency as key to keeping America globally competitive.
Under current law, H-1B visa holders must leave the US to renew their visas, often facing bureaucratic delays. A pilot programme launched in 2024 now allows some renewals to take place within the US
However, Joy strongly disagreed: “It has nothing to do with keeping America competitive. Our major national competitors don’t bring in large numbers of foreign workers,” he wrote on X.
Social media users push back against extreme stance
Joy’s comments faced instant backlash. “Absolutely not. The system has been completely abused and is directly responsible for Americans losing their jobs,” one user commented. Another added, “Disagree with this %.”
Others proposed reforms rather than termination: “If you’re a current H-1B and have submitted net positive tax returns for five years, we can open a green card path… then shut down H-1B for the future.”
Ajay Jain Bhutoria highlights bipartisan progress on visa renewal reform
Under current law, H-1B visa holders must leave the US to renew their visas, often facing bureaucratic delays. A pilot programme launched in 2024 now allows some renewals to take place within the US—thanks in part to the advocacy of Indian-American entrepreneur Ajay Jain Bhutoria.
On May 15, Bhutoria posted: “I’m thrilled to see bipartisan support for domestic visa renewal! The pilot programme, launched based on my recommendation to the WHIAANHPI Commission & implemented by the State Dept, is a step forward.”
The clash underscores deep divisions over immigration and labour policy in the US, particularly in tech and professional sectors reliant on skilled foreign workers.
