An Indian-origin student, Ranjani Srinivasan, has self-deported from the United States after her student visa was revoked due to her involvement in pro-Palestine protests. The Department of Homeland Security announced on Friday that Srinivasan, a doctoral student in urban planning at Columbia University, participated in activities supporting Hamas, a group designated as a terrorist organization, reported gujaratsamachar.com.

Srinivasan Leaves the US After Visa Revocation

Srinivasan left the US on March 11, after the State Department revoked her student visa. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that Srinivasan voluntarily left the country by using the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home app to facilitate her departure. Noem criticized Srinivasan’s support for violence, stating that the privilege of studying in the US should be revoked when individuals advocate for terrorism.

  • Srinivasan, originally from India, had been involved in the protests at Columbia University, which had become a central location for student protests in support of Palestine and against Israel over the Gaza conflict

  • These protests included a violent campus takeover, with many students arrested

Uncertainty Over Srinivasan’s Specific Involvement in Protests

While it is not clear whether Srinivasan had been directly involved in violent actions during the protests or expressed sympathy for Hamas, many protesters were simply voicing opposition to Israel’s actions in Gaza, not necessarily endorsing terrorism.

The controversy surrounding these protests has drawn significant attention to the issue of anti-Semitism and immigration violations at Columbia University.
