In a significant development for Indian expatriates and tourists in the UAE, the renowned Abu Dhabi-headquartered Lulu Group International has rolled out India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) across all its stores. This move allows Indian visitors and residents to make payments seamlessly using their RuPay cards or UPI-enabled apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.

The initiative was officially launched on August 15 at Lulu Hypermarket in Abu Dhabi, with A. Amarnath, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy, making the inaugural transaction. This new payment facility is expected to greatly benefit the over 10 million Indians who visit the UAE annually, offering them a convenient and familiar method of transaction.

UPI, a system that consolidates multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application, was first introduced in the UAE in February when President Sheikh Mohammed and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi jointly launched the UPI RuPay card service in Abu Dhabi. Following this, several other UAE-based entities, including Dubai’s Mashreq Bank and Al Maya Supermarkets, adopted the UPI payment system.
