Australian police have launched a major investigation after an Indian international student was hospitalised following a violent robbery near a suburban Sydney train station, with the incident reported within the past 24 hours.

According to New South Wales Police, the 22-year-old student was returning from evening work when he was allegedly confronted by a group of unidentified attackers who demanded his phone and wallet. Witnesses stated that the student was assaulted after resisting the robbery attempt before the suspects fled on foot.

Emergency responders transported the victim to hospital with facial injuries and possible fractures. Police confirmed that surveillance footage from nearby transit cameras is being examined while officers continue interviewing witnesses.

“This was a serious and violent offence, and investigators are pursuing multiple leads,” a police spokesperson said.

The incident has generated concern among Indian students across Australia, particularly because many international students rely on late-night public transport while balancing academic schedules and part-time employment. Student associations called for increased police patrols and stronger safety measures near transport corridors.

University officials issued advisories encouraging students to avoid isolated travel routes late at night and to use campus safety services where available.

The Indian High Commission in Canberra acknowledged the attack and confirmed that consular officials are monitoring the case while remaining in contact with local authorities.
