Postgraduate AI and technology programmes emerge as key attraction as Germany strengthens its appeal as a study destination for Indian students
Germany is rapidly emerging as one of the most sought-after higher education destinations for Indian students, with applications rising sharply in the first half of 2026, driven largely by growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and data-focused programmes.
According to a new study based on application and counselling data from more than 124,000 Indian students, applications to German universities increased by 370 per cent between January and June 2026 compared with the same period last year. Interest in Master’s programmes specialising in artificial intelligence recorded an even steeper 600 per cent increase, reflecting the growing preference for courses aligned with emerging technology careers.
The report found that postgraduate programmes accounted for 82 per cent of all Indian applications to Germany during the period. Student engagement with German universities also rose significantly, with course interactions increasing by 72 per cent year-on-year, indicating a shift from general overseas education enquiries to targeted programme selection.

Interest also grew in broader computer science programmes, while courses combining data science and artificial intelligence continued to gain momentum. Students are placing greater emphasis on long-term career prospects, return on investment and employment opportunities rather than university rankings alone.
The trend reflects changing priorities among Indian students, who are increasingly selecting destinations that offer a direct pathway from higher education to skilled employment, particularly in high-demand sectors such as AI, data science and information technology.
