In a tragic incident that has shocked both Canada and India, an Indian research scholar, Shivank Avasthi, was fatally shot near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. Reports confirm that the doctoral student lost his life in what police have described as a sudden and violent attack.

According to the University of Toronto authorities and local media, the shooting occurred around 3:34 p.m. near Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road. Responding officers discovered Avasthi with a gunshot wound and pronounced him dead at the scene. The assailants reportedly fled before police could arrive. The incident marks the 41st homicide in Toronto for 2025, highlighting ongoing public safety concerns in the city.
