In a significant humanitarian gesture, a senior Iranian official announced Tehran’s willingness to intervene in the case of Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala sentenced to death in Yemen for the murder of a Yemeni national, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Speaking on Thursday under anonymity, the official stated, “We are ready to do whatever we can as it involves a humanitarian issue.”

Nimisha Priya, who has been imprisoned since 2017, recently had her death sentence upheld by Yemen’s president. This decision has prompted India to provide legal assistance and maintain close communication with her family. Meanwhile, Iran’s offer of support gains significance as Iran-backed Houthi rebels control large parts of Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa.

  • Additionally, Iran expressed interest in strengthening counter-terrorism cooperation with India, particularly in light of recent events in Syria

  • These discussions signal Iran’s broader intent to deepen its strategic and economic ties with India amidst evolving geopolitical scenarios

Iran’s outreach comes at a time when India and Iran are preparing for another round of foreign office consultations. Tehran is expected to advocate for the revival of trade relations, particularly the resumption of oil exports to India. Notably, while India has increased its crude imports from Russia despite international sanctions, it has not resumed oil imports from Iran. “We don’t want to impose any hardship on India, but there are opportunities that can be explored,” the Iranian official said. Highlighting the disparity in sanctions faced by Iran and Russia, the official emphasized the need for a resolution that enables mutual economic benefits.

The Iranian official also commented on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, reiterating Iran’s support for Palestine and condemning Israel’s military actions. “The core issue is the occupation of Palestine, and it must be addressed. We want to see an independent Palestinian state,” they said, adding that these developments have further “internationalized” the Palestine issue.
