Jaishankar lauds Indian diaspora role during his visit to Portugal

He acknowledged the significance of the Migration and Mobility Partnership in the context of a global workforce and stressed the importance of establishing direct air connectivity

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Indian diaspora in Portugal, emphasizing the Mediterranean country’s role in fostering closer ties between India and the European Union (EU), news agency ANI reported.

During his speech, he acknowledged the significance of the Migration and Mobility Partnership in the context of a global workforce and stressed the importance of establishing direct air connectivity.

Jaishankar also urged the Indian community in Portugal to actively participate in the upcoming 50th-anniversary celebrations of diplomatic relations between India and Portugal. He took to social media, saying, “Addressed the Indian Community in Portugal. Thank FM @JoaoCravinho for joining. Highlighted Portugal’s contribution in promoting closer India-EU ties. The Porto 2021 Summit is a milestone. Recognized the relevance of the Migration and Mobility Partnership in a Global workplace. Appreciated the need for direct air connectivity.”

Furthermore, Jaishankar shared insights into the ongoing transformation in India, which offers new avenues for cooperation, and encouraged the Indian community in Portugal to contribute to the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

Earlier in the day, S. Jaishankar and his Portuguese counterpart, Joao Cravinho, delivered a joint statement during a press briefing, where they discussed various aspects of the India-Portugal relationship. Jaishankar highlighted the increasing energy and activities in Indo-Portugal relations, particularly in sectors such as trade and investment. He also pointed out the significant presence of Indian IT companies in Portugal.

In a notable development, Jaishankar expressed his delight in India’s main milk and dairy company, Amul, becoming the first Indian regional sponsor of the Portuguese national football team.

Before addressing the Indian diaspora, Jaishankar met with Portugal’s President, Augusto Santos Silva, and discussed their valued political and parliamentary exchanges. In their meeting, they conducted a detailed assessment of the bilateral partnership between the two countries. They also discussed the possibility of further collaboration in areas such as health, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy, with plans for their joint economic committee to follow up on these discussions.

Following his visit to Portugal, S. Jaishankar is set to travel to Italy for a bilateral visit from November 2 to 3. During his stay in Italy, he will meet his Italian counterpart, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the Minister of Defence, and the Minister for ‘Made in Italy.’ Additionally, he is expected to engage with the top leadership of the country.
