A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) living in Azerbaijan has accused a local lawyer in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, of illegally occupying his vacant plot of land and demanding money to release it. The case has raised fresh concerns over the safety of properties owned by Indians living abroad.

According to the complaint, the land is located in Ayodhya Vihar Phase-2 in the Chakeri area of Kanpur. The NRI said he had legally purchased the plot but later discovered that it had been encroached upon while it remained vacant. He alleged that the accused lawyer took possession of the land without any legal right.

When the landowner objected to the encroachment, the lawyer allegedly demanded ₹25 lakh in exchange for vacating the plot. The NRI described this as an act of extortion and said he felt helpless due to his absence from the country.

  • The complainant first approached the Chakeri police station and filed a formal complaint

  • However, he claimed that no effective action was taken initially

  • Frustrated by the delay, the NRI then submitted a written appeal to the Police Commissioner, seeking intervention and protection of his property rights

Following the appeal, the Chakeri police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and began an investigation into the allegations. Officials have stated that the matter is now under active inquiry and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.

Meanwhile, a video shared by the NRI on social media, in which he appeals directly to the Police Commissioner for help, has gone viral. While the video has attracted public attention, its contents could not be independently verified at the time of reporting.
