Alwin Prakash Kunder, 51, had worked at Sharjah Airport for about 14 years; UAE authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death
A 51-year-old man from Karnataka’s Udupi district was allegedly murdered in Sharjah, with his body later recovered from the boot of his car in nine pieces, according to his family and reports citing UAE authorities. His wife and teenage son remain untraceable, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the case.
Alwin Prakash Kunder, a native of Kundapur, had been working at Sharjah Airport for around 14 years. He lived in Sharjah with his wife Tina, a teacher from Udyavara in Udupi district, and their Class 10 son.
Alwin last spoke to his elder brother, Anil Kunder, on July 20. When subsequent calls went unanswered, the family became concerned. Messages were later sent from Alwin’s phone saying he was unwell and resting, but his brother said this was unusual because Alwin normally communicated through voice messages.
Udupi police are facilitating contact with Indian diplomatic officials, while formalities are being completed in the UAE before Alwin’s remains can be brought back to India
A friend who went to check on him was reportedly told that Alwin and his family had travelled to India. His company also initially understood that he had left for India. However, a subsequent passport check indicated that he had not travelled out of the UAE. A missing-person complaint was then filed in Sharjah on July 30, according to the family.
Authorities later recovered Alwin’s car on August 12 on a road towards Oman. His body was found in the boot, placed in two bags and reportedly cut into nine pieces. His identity was subsequently confirmed and the family received his death certificate.
The family has also been told that CCTV footage showed three people carrying bags and placing them in the vehicle. However, the identities of those involved and the circumstances of the alleged killing have not been established.
The whereabouts of Tina and their son remain unknown. The family has sought assistance from UAE authorities and the Udupi police.
