Canada did not listen to India’s request not to allow the second “Khalistan Referendum” that was held in Mississauga on November 6. The organisers claimed the referendum was “necessitated because a large number of voters were turned away as a result of long queues during the original Brampton vote in October”.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs had said it was “deeply objectionable that politically motivated exercises by extremist elements are allowed to take place in a friendly country”.

While the event was peaceful, police permission for the referendum indicated that the Canadian government had ignored Delhi’s call against separatists based overseas. India had asked Canada to declare those individuals and entities who have been similarly designated by the Indian authorities as terrorists.
