Two theories make Kushinagar a focus point in tourism. Heritage is in Kushinagar’s favour that suggests it was the capital of Kosala Kingdom, son of Rama, King Kush. He said to have built it, according to the epic Ramayana. As per Buddhism, the name Kushwati comes from the Kush grass in this region.
It is in this backdrop that PM Modi on Wednesday (October 20, 2021) inaugurated the Kushinagar International Airport, which will not only put this town and eastern Uttar Pradesh on the global aviation map, but also prove to be a boon being an important link in the Buddhist Circuit.
Already Sri Lanka and Thailand have welcomed the initiative as Mahaparinirvana was attained by Lord Buddha here.

Further, Kushinagar-Delhi direct flight from November 26 and Mumbai, Kolkata connect too have been hailed. Meanwhile, SpiceJet has announced flights on the Delhi-Kushinagar-Delhi sector on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The air strip of UP Civil Aviation is 2 km away from Kushinagar in Kasia.
Constructed at a cost of ₹260 crore; its passenger terminal is spread across 3,600 square kilometres. Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, was also present at the inauguration ceremony.
A 200 km long Kushinagar-Sarnath Buddha Expressway connecting Buddhist pilgrimage towns has also been proposed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
