The Maharashtra Mandal Residents Association of Nigeria (MMN) proudly celebrates its 36th annual Ganesh Utsav this year, showcasing a steadfast commitment to preserving Indian cultural traditions despite local challenges. MMN has demonstrated remarkable resilience, adapting the vibrant Ganesh Chaturthi festival to fit local conditions with creativity and innovation.

Ganesh Utsav, a beloved festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is known for its lively decorations, intricate rituals, and deep devotion. For over three decades, MMN has worked tirelessly to keep this cultural tradition alive in Nigeria, evolving its practices to reflect the community’s resourcefulness. Despite obstacles such as limited access to traditional materials, this year’s celebration stands as a testament to the determination and ingenuity of the Indian diaspora in Lagos.

One of the most striking aspects of the festival this year is the locally crafted Ganesh idols, made from sand and cement by a Nigerian artist. MMN members have further enhanced the festivities by creating stunning decorations using unconventional, locally-sourced materials. These idols and decorations have become emblematic of the festival, representing both the community’s artistic flair and their unwavering dedication to maintaining cultural traditions.

Founded in 1979, the Maharashtra Mandal Residents Association of Nigeria is a non-profit organization devoted to nurturing and celebrating the cultural heritage of Maharashtra and India. The organization promotes Indian culture, values, and traditions through various activities, including festivals like Makar Sankranti, Shiv Jayanti, Maharashtra Day, Sports Festival, and Ganesh Utsav. Each event reflects the customs and rituals integral to Indian culture, bringing the community closer together.

“Our mission has always been to bring the spirit of Ganesh Utsav to life, no matter the limitations,” said Girish Jaykar, President of MMN. “The support from our community and the incredible efforts of our volunteers are what make it possible. It’s inspiring to see how we can overcome challenges through creativity and collective effort.”

For the devotees, this festival goes beyond a mere celebration; it is a powerful expression of faith, creativity, and community spirit. Even far from their homeland, the members of Maharashtra Mandal Nigeria have ensured that the essence of Ganesh Chaturthi continues to thrive in Lagos

This year’s Ganesh Utsav holds even more significance with the re-establishment of the Sri Ram Mandir after over five centuries. The MMN decoration team, led by Santosh Raut, Girish Jaykar, and  Jitendra Matkar, with strong support from volunteers including  Niteen Nagine,  Sanket Kadam, and  Makarand Dahidule, created an 18-foot tall and 22-foot wide replica of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. This remarkable effort was appreciated by Vijay Nikte, the founder of MMN’s Ganesh Utsav, and Chandramouli Kumar Kern, the Consul General of India in Lagos, who visited on Sthapana day and praised the team’s dedication.

Beyond the stunning decorations and idol, MMN has also organized a variety of events to engage the community. A drawing competition for children, a modak-making contest for women and children, and a home Ganesh decoration competition have all added to the festival’s festive spirit. These activities, combined with cultural performances and gatherings, help to reinforce the sense of community, unity, and faith that defines Ganesh Utsav.
