Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary celebrated in Myanmar

By Ravindra Jain

YANGON (Myanmar):  Swami Vivekanand Cultural Centre Yangon, in collaboration with the Indian Embassy in Myanmar, orchestrated a meaningful event at the India Center Yangon, marking the 154th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the revered leader of the Indian independence movement.

The occasion bore witness to the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Vinay Kumar, Ambassador of India in Myanmar; Ashish Sharma, Deputy Chief of Mission; Reeta Meena, Ravindra Jain, President of Gopio Myanmar; and Thangaraja, President of MIBF.

The gathering of over 100 participants made this event truly memorable.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and the offering of flowers in profound homage to Mahatma Gandhi, whose enduring principles of non-violence and truth continue to be a source of inspiration for the world. In his address, Vinay Kumar underscored the timeless relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings in today’s complex world.

To encourage creativity and contemplation of Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, a poetry writing competition was organised, with the winners receiving certificates and cash prizes from the Indian Ambassador. In alignment with Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a clean and healthy society, all participants took an oath for cleanliness as part of the Swachh Bharat fortnight initiative.

A poignant moment during the event was the heartfelt recognition and respect accorded to the custodial staff of the India Center, highlighting the dignity of all forms of labor and underscoring Mahatma Gandhi’s cherished values.

The commemorative event culminated with refreshments, fostering a sense of camaraderie and facilitating cultural exchange among the attendees.

“This event was not just a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi but also a catalyst in strengthening the cultural bonds between India and Myanmar. It promoted the enduring values of peace, unity, and cleanliness, which lay at the heart of Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy,” said Ravindra Jain, Gopio’s Myanmar President.
