International Day of Non-Violence marking Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday observed in Muscat

In a remarkable observance of the 154th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the United Nations International Day of Non-Violence on October 2, 2023, the Embassy of India, in partnership with the Raja Yoga Center for Self-Development, orchestrated a well-attended event in Muscat.

The gathering was graced by over 300 participants, including esteemed resident ambassadors, members of the Indian community, and friends of India in Oman.

The distinguished presence of Her Highness Basma Al Said elevated the event’s significance as the Chief Guest. She delivered a thought-provoking address, emphasizing the paramount importance of peace and non-violence in nurturing global harmony and mutual understanding.

Indian Ambassador Amit Narang, in his impassioned speech, shed light on Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless message and its profound relevance in today’s society. He invoked Gandhiji’s cherished hymn, “Vaishnava Jan…,” highlighting its message of empathy as a clarion call for human benevolence. Ambassador Narang urged all present to rekindle the spirit of Gandhi’s humane globalism within their hearts and rediscover the essence of “Vaishnav Jan” within themselves.

Sister BK Maureen, Programme Director for the Brahma Kumaris, UK, and Brahma Kumaris representative at the United Nations in Vienna, delivered the keynote address, immersing the audience in a contemplative experience. Her address reiterated the significance of inner peace in the construction of a harmonious world.

The event also featured enchanting performances by students from the Indian School Darsait and Seeb, who captivated the audience with classical dances set to the famous bhajan “Vaishnav Jan” and a skit centered around the theme of peace. These performances resonated deeply with the core values of Mahatma Gandhi and the International Day of Non-Violence.

This solemn celebration in Muscat on October 2, 2023, served as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and the enduring relevance of non-violence in our ever-evolving world.
