Subheading: India’s largest carmaker is accelerating its shift towards SUVs and technology-rich models as changing consumer preferences reshape the country’s automobile market
Maruti Suzuki is overhauling its product strategy in India as rising consumer expectations and intensifying competition challenge the dominance it has enjoyed for more than four decades.
The country’s largest carmaker, which built its success on affordable, fuel-efficient hatchbacks, is increasingly focusing on sport utility vehicles (SUVs), premium features and faster product development to regain momentum in a rapidly evolving market.
Maruti Suzuki once commanded nearly 80 per cent of India’s passenger vehicle market, but its share has gradually fallen to about 39 per cent as buyers increasingly opt for larger, feature-rich vehicles offered by rivals such as Tata Motors and Mahindra. The shift reflects rising incomes and changing customer preferences, particularly among younger buyers seeking advanced technology, comfort and design.

According to industry reports, the company was initially reluctant to introduce features such as panoramic sunroofs, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and larger infotainment displays, believing they were not essential for Indian driving conditions
-
That cautious approach allowed competitors to gain ground by making such features widely available across their model ranges
Maruti Suzuki has since revised its strategy by investing more heavily in research and development in India, reducing product development timelines and expanding its SUV portfolio. The company is also reviewing additional premium technologies to improve its appeal among urban and younger consumers.
Despite the growing competitive pressure, Maruti Suzuki remains one of India’s most profitable automobile manufacturers, reporting strong revenues and earnings in the last financial year. However, analysts say the company must continue modernising its product lineup while addressing its long-standing image as a maker of budget vehicles if it is to maintain leadership in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.
