Muscat: In celebration of Omani Tree Day, Mazoon Dairy, the flagship dairy company of the Sultanate, organised an event to plant 200 local seedlings at the company’s site in the Wilayat of As’Sunainah, in addition to distributing 200 local seedlings to its employees.

This initiative is part of the company’s aim to expand green cover and raise awareness among the community of the significance of environmental sustainability and wildlife in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Sultanate celebrates Tree Day on October 31st each year as an affirmation of the importance of the local flora to the environment. The celebration also aims to encourage the community to preserve and cultivate trees and local vegetation, as it not only contributes towards sustainability but also helps diversify income sources, which is in line with Oman Vision 2040’s objectives.

In addition to the pursuit of planting more trees, Mazoon Dairy, in cooperation with a number of government and private institutions, has contributed to providing a number of ‘local’ wild trees for planting at their farm in As’Sunainah.

Rashid Al Maqbali, Administration & Facilities Manager at Mazoon said, “We launched this initiative in 2018 to bring attention to the importance of increasing the green space and its impact on society and the environment, as well as to enhance the sustainability of the vegetation cover, rehabilitate the site, and reduce desertification. The initiative is in line with the company’s sustainability plans in all its operations, which employs the latest practices and technologies in the field, and also aligns with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 towards creating sustainable governorates and cities that achieve a balance between environmental, economic, and social requirements.”

As part of the company’s interest in biodiversity in the governorate, Ahmed Al Neyadi Environmental and Sustainability Specialist at Mazoon explained, “During the last period, the circular economy team conducted a pioneering experiment in which they planted frankincense trees in the Wilayat of As’Sunainah. Oman’s frankincense tree is considered one of its most important trees due to its economic, historical, and medicinal properties. The experiment began with the planting of a few trees without modifying the soil, which in turn proved successful.

Rashid Al Maqbali, Administration & Facilities Manager at Mazoon said, “We launched this initiative in 2018 to bring attention to the importance of increasing the green space and its impact on society and the environment, as well as to enhance the sustainability of the vegetation cover,

The frankincense trees were able to adapt to the environment at Mazoon Dairy’s site, which hopefully can lead to expanding the cultivation of frankincense in the region.”

Mazoon Dairy started a large-scale afforestation campaign at its site in the Wilayat of As’Sunainah in Al Buraimi Governorate in 2018, with the aim of transforming the desert area into a green oasis, as part of the complementary environmental sustainability projects at the site. The number of trees that have been planted so far has reached 40,000.
