The date of her arrival in New Zealand is yet to be confirmed
India has announced the appointment of senior diplomat Muanpuii Saiawi as its next High Commissioner to New Zealand. The decision was made public by the Government of India on 19 January 2026. Saiawi, an Indian Foreign Service officer from the 2005 batch, is currently serving as a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and is expected to assume her new role shortly.
Saiawi hails from Mizoram in northeast India, a region known for its rich cultural heritage. She will succeed Neeta Bhushan, who has been India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand since 2022. Bhushan, a 1994-batch IFS officer, has had a distinguished diplomatic career with postings in countries such as Japan, Bangladesh, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
The High Commissioner is the highest-ranking diplomat representing a country in another Commonwealth nation. The role includes managing diplomatic relations, strengthening political and economic ties, supporting trade and cultural exchanges, and providing consular services to citizens. The High Commissioner also oversees the daily functioning of the High Commission and acts as the main channel of communication between the two governments.
Saiawi’s appointment comes at an important time, as India and New Zealand look to deepen their relationship. Recently, both countries announced the conclusion of talks on a Free Trade Agreement, signalling a renewed push to expand economic cooperation.
During her career, Saiawi has served in several overseas Indian missions. Her previous roles include political work in South Korea, cultural and educational responsibilities in Japan, and assignments related to media, culture and tourism in Israel. Within the ministry, she has also worked on cyber diplomacy and emerging strategic technologies.
