The mood was set early in the evening with the announcement of performances by MS’ great granddaughters S Aishwarya and S Saundarya. Both the sisters regaled an august gathering in Muscat during the recently concluded ‘Music from distant lands’ organized by the Oman’s premier travel operator, Travel Point at the Sheraton Hotel’s Banquet Hall.
The audience had an opportunity to listen to the echo of Bharat Ratna MS Subbulakshmi’s mellifluous voice through S Aishwarya and S Saundarya. The two strains of the sisters melded well during the course of the event as they presented several soulful songs together, while Aishwarya also presented some classical dance performances.
The event attracted a large crowd due to variety of programmes ranging from Omani Orchestra to classical, semi-classical, Indian regional songs, Sufi and Ghazals and popular Punjabi Bhangra dance.
There were performances by Sucel Milan Sanchez on Saxophone, famous Jai Ho song by a group of singers, drums by Abhinav Ganesh Kumar, movie songs in Kannada, Konkani, Tulu and Hindi by Velita Lobo and group and Omani Orchestra by Yousuf al Fouri and group.
Dr Vandana Jyotirmayee made a smart entry with her Ghazal and Sufi songs as a guest performer. She took the event to a different level with her songs ‘Aj Jane ki jid na karo’; ‘Chhap tilak’ and ‘Damadam mast Kalandar’.
Her accompanists included Mohammed Kasim on Keyboard, Vineet Pandit on Harmonium and Usman Parvez on Tabla.
A university teacher by profession, Dr Vandana keeps keen interest in music and keeps on doing performances in India and abroad.
The event concluded with Omani singer Munther al Balushi’s Bollywood numbers. Since the crowd was a mix of Omani and expatriates, Munther drew instant appreciation from all due to his control over Hindi accent and Bollywood songs. His songs were so much in demand that he had to come back again on the dais on popular demand.
In his comments, Sunil D’Souza, CEO of Travel Point, said: “We are pleased with the success of this artistic concert, which was organised to celebrate the accomplishments of our company over the past two years, especially in light of the challenges that the world faced as a result of the pandemic. Despite these circumstances, Travel Point succeeded in maintaining its level of business as one of the major travel and tourism agencies in the Sultanate, and even achieved noteworthy success and results.”
As a matter of an opportunity to share the achievements of the Travel Point with the august audience, D’Souza noted, “One of our biggest achievements during the Covid-19 pandemic was brainstorming and teamwork. We were among the first companies to offer repatriation flights for expats wishing to travel during the intensification of the crisis. We succeeded in organising and arranging 246 evacuation flights to about 20 countries, through coordination with civil aviation, immigration, government institutions, embassies, and other relevant parties.”

“We are also proud that we contribute to protecting the environment and working on sustainability, through our work on an important project to plant trees as a contribution to preserving the environment,” he said.
The purpose of the event, according to him, “was a celebration of not only the achievements, but also our commercial and financial success as well as our incredible team at Travel Point who have worked tirelessly to bring us to where we are today. We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate our employees for their contribution towards our accomplishments.”
The ceremony witnessed a large attendance of more than 350 people representing CEOs, general managers, and directors of major companies in the Sultanate, including partners, supporters and collaborators of the company.
“The concert was a welcome break and source of refreshment for everyone invited, as well as an event to support the business that we do and extend our support to small and medium-sized Omani businesses working in the field of travel and tourism. We are carrying out an important project; a partnership between TravelPoint and SMEs across all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, so that any agency can collaborate with Travel Point and any tickets that they sell through our company can get a commission or a fee, as well as an additional amount from the other party. This is Travel Point’s initiative to offer support to Omani entrepreneurs working in the field of travel and tourism.”
